Williams and Mr. White met in at a Nashville songwriting camp, where two dozen musicians had been thrown together to brainstorm about material for a country star. Both of their careers had stalled: Ms. Williams, from Santa Cruz, Calif. White, from outside Muscle Shoals, had parted ways with Capitol Records after recording a rock album that was never released. But they soon discovered their voices melded beautifully, and the songs they produced had a haunting, folksy charm. For the next 21 months, Mr. White and Ms. Williams had a dizzying ride, collecting awards, appearing on national television and singing at the Grand Ole Opry and at the White House.
Onstage there was a crackling romantic energy between them, although both were married to other people and always maintained that their lovelorn duets and ballads were pure artifice. In July Ms. Williams gave birth to their first child, Miles, who traveled with the duo during its last tour.
